The history of artistic genres has perhaps come to an end,but the human relevance of art has not come to an end with it; instead, therelation has grown even closer. The core of this closeness lies in the factthat art, as the most open-ended means of cultural practice, has been directlyinvolved with edification of human sentiment and conceptions. In order toestablish that “the important thing is not art,” such a judgment needs to bepremised on a connection drawn between human values and artistic function. Onthis level artistic experimentation is itself a means, an aspect, of socialpractice. Only on this level can Jiang Ji’an, along with other artists workingin a similar vein, be understood.
